SARS Tax Debt

In a time where SARS will likely increase verifications and audits to try to increase their income, it is important to be aware of your rights as taxpayer.

A recent court case has highlighted issues with receiving notices and letters on E-Filing. SARS may not arrange with your bank to pull an outstanding tax debt directly from your bank account without giving you notice 10 days before.

Many incorrect tax debts arise where the taxpayer hasn’t submitted supporting documents to SARS when requested. SARS will then often write back your deductions, since you haven’t substantiated them. This will then lead to SARS eventually trying to recover the unpaid debt. You will need to object the incorrect assessment and provide sufficient proof before SARS will reassess your case.

It is your responsibility as taxpayer to make sure that you submit everything requested. If you receive a text message or email letting you know that you have correspondence on E-Filing, do not ignore this. Be aware that SARS may request supporting documents multiple times and that you have 21 days to submit these documents each time.
